Successful inspiration & networking event on Transport Optimization

June 27, 2024 1060 Views

Kasteel Sint-Michiels in Belgium was the inspiring venue for Groenewout’s inspiration and networking session, focusing on transportation and optimized route planning. Special thanks to our speakers:

Their success stories were truly enlightening and provided valuable insights to all attendees. We also would like to thank everyone who joined us. Your participation made this event a resounding success!

Arthur Zondervan, Managing Consultant & Partner of Groenewout opened the day by introducing Groenewout’s expertise in the area of transportation consulting such as distribution network studies, benchmarking and optimizations of hub locations.

Clemens Beckmann, CEO of Greenplan, started the afternoon with an introduction to Greenplan on Innovative Route Planning. Greenplan started in 2016 as a spin-off of Deutsche Post / DHL, where they learned the first basics of optimizing routes for parcel deliveries. Soon after, they collaborated with mathematicians of the University in Bonn to further enhance their route planning algorithms. Since then, they have won several prizes, for example the Amazon last mile competition. One of Greenplan’s software strengths is that they include a high level of accuracy in the transport time from A to B at any given time in the day / week, supported by TomTom data (per 200 m road, per 5 minutes interval). With these speed profiles, the Greenplan algorithm creates routes that optimally avoid the negative effects of traffic jams for drivers.

Frank Gerritsen, Group Product Manager E-commerce of Jumbo, presented on Cost Efficiency and Punctuality at Jumbo’s online business. Since February this year, all online grocery transport routes for Jumbo in the Netherlands are planned by Greenplan; 590 vans starting from 18 hubs.

After the networkbreak, Evert Armirotto, Transport Coordinator presented on Optimizing Transport at Arvesta; Balancing Operations and the Voice of the Customer. Arvesta has 200 shops in Belgium (mostly Aveve shops) with agricultural products, all supplied from one central warehouse. Arvesta faced issues with lead times and reliability and asked Groenewout for logistics support. A major issue was caused by imbalance due to a strong seasonality and significant differences within the week. Arvesta and Groenewout analyzed several scenarios. Groenewout also requested the support of Greenplan to analyze the impact on the transport routes. An important result was that Arvesta could move away from clustering regions on specific days. Even without clustering, there were sufficient stops to create efficient routes. This opened the opportunity to equally divide the workload over the days of the week and to improve the logistics efficiency and reliability.
